Shunt Reactor Vendor Expat (40 MVA Class)

Position Summary

The Shunt Reactor Vendor Expat (40 MVA) acts as the technical representative of the OEM on-site. They are responsible for overseeing the safe and correct erection, oil processing, testing, and commissioning support of the shunt reactor in full alignment with factory standards, Client procedures, and project safety requirements. This role is essential to ensuring proper handover, performance validation, and warranty compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise receipt, inspection, and mechanical assembly of the 40 MVA shunt reactor and all associated components, including: Bushings, oil conservator, radiators, OTI/WTI, nitrogen system, and control cabinets.
  • Oversee vacuum oil filling, filtration, and degassing using approved equipment; verify oil samples (BDV, moisture).
  • Support and witness pre-commissioning electrical tests, including:Insulation resistance, winding resistance, ratio check (if applicable), tan delta, CT polarity, and magnetization curve checks.
  • Ensure all wiring terminations, alarm circuits, temperature sensors, and trip signals are connected per OEM documentation.
  • Verify correct earthing, lifting torque values, nitrogen pre-pressurization, and preservation system functionality.
  • Interface with SCADA and protection teams to validate signal mapping and logic integration.
  • Conduct punch list reviews, redline markups, and daily field reporting.
  • Provide on-site technical clarification for OEM drawings, manuals, and procedures.
  • Submit a detailed Site Acceptance Report and Field Service Report post-commissioning.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

Technical diploma or degree in Electrical/Power Engineering or related field.

Years of Experience

8–10 years of field service experience in transformer/reactor installation and testing, with at least 3 years handling >30 MVA shunt reactors.

Industry Exposure

Experience in high-voltage utility substations, oil & gas projects, or transmission infrastructure.

Technical Tool/Software Proficiency

  • Familiarity with reactor and transformer test equipment
  • Microsoft Excel/Word for site reporting and punch list tracking
  • Comfortable reading GA drawings, wiring diagrams, and IED interface layouts

Technical Skills

  • Expertise in shunt reactor installation, core assembly verification, and nitrogen system preparation.
  • Familiarity with IEC 60076-6 (shunt reactors), factory-to-site handling precautions, and electrical test acceptance criteria.
  • Ability to supervise oil filling and dielectric fluid processing with an emphasis on moisture control.
  • Competence in checking thermal sensors, WTI/OTI settings, and protective relay wiring compliance.

Preferred Additional Qualifications

  • Experience supporting commissioning with Schneider Electric or major OEMs.
  • Familiarity with oil testing, nitrogen systems, and transformer/reactor protection principles.
  • Fluency in English required; French or Swahili is a plus.

Work Conditions

  • Field-based in remote substation locations along the Uganda.
  • Full PPE compliance required; work near energized equipment and oil systems.
  • May require extended hours during testing, oil filling, and energization windows.
  • Travel between multiple project sites may be required.
