Position Summary

The 66kV Cable Termination Vendor Expat is a certified factory-trained specialist responsible for the on-site supervision and execution of cable terminations on 66kV XLPE indoor /outdoor type cables. The role ensures that all high-voltage accessories are installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions, pass type-tested standards, and are documented to ensure warranty and system reliability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and/or perform 66kV HV cable terminations and joints at GIS switchgear, transformer bushings, and outdoor terminations.
  • Ensure strict adherence to OEM procedures for cable preparation, insulation stripping, stress control, lug crimping, and sheath bonding.
  • Validate cable layout, phase identification, bend radius, and clearance requirements before execution.
  • Oversee cleanroom-level installation practices including humidity control, cleanliness and PPE.
  • Coordinate with Client’s QA/QC and commissioning team for insulation resistance, sheath testing, and partial discharge testing.
  • Verify link box grounding, screen continuity, and bonding/earthing configurations (single-point, cross-bonding, etc.).
  • Provide hands-on training or supervision to local jointing technicians if required.
  • Document all installation steps, jointing certificates, torque values, and test results for as-built records.
  • Report any cable defects, kit damages, or site conditions that may compromise insulation integrity.
  • Interface with GIS/transformer vendors during termination alignment and system handover.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

Certified by HV cable accessory manufacturer (e.g., Nexans, Prysmian, Brugg, 3M,

Pfisterer, TE Connectivity).

Years of Experience

Minimum 5–7 years of direct experience in 66kV (or higher) cable termination and

jointing in EPC or utility projects.

Industry Exposure

 Experience in oil & gas, utility substations, or grid-connected renewable infrastructure.

Technical Tool/Software Proficiency

  • HV cable preparation tools, hydraulic crimping tools, and torque measurement equipment.
  • Familiarity with test equipment used for IR, sheath, and VLF testing.
  • Microsoft Excel/Word for installation reports.

Technical Skills

  • Strong expertise in 66kV XLPE cable construction, joint kits, stress cones, and screen continuity.
  • Ability to execute heat-shrink, cold-shrink, or premolded termination systems per manufacturer guidance.
  • Knowledge of IEC 60840 or IEEE 404 standards for HV cable testing and installation.
  • Experience with cable test protocols (IR, sheath, VLF, PD if applicable).
  • Understanding of GIS, transformer, or outdoor termination alignment requirements.

  • Extremely detail-oriented and quality-driven in field installation practices.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work with site supervisors, QA/QC, and EPC teams.
  • Safety-conscious, especially with live circuit proximity and confined cable galleries.
  • Patient, precise, and adaptable to field delays or unforeseen installation challenges.

Preferred Additional Qualifications

  • Multiple OEM certifications for different termination kit suppliers.
  • Fluency in English required; Swahili or French is an advantage.

Work Conditions

  • Site-based in remote substations in UGANDA.
  • Full PPE and compliance with high-voltage safety and confined space standards.
  • Work may include elevated platforms, trenches, or indoor switchgear rooms.
  • Flexibility required for shift work during critical testing or energization phase
