Closing on: Nov 15, 2025

Position Summary

The 66kV GIS Hi-Pot Test Supervisor – Vendor Expat is a specialized factory representative deployed to site to lead and supervise the high-voltage withstand testing (Hi-Pot) of GIS switchgear, as required by OEM protocols and IEC standards. The role ensures that all dielectric tests are safely executed, accurately documented, and fully aligned with both Client and manufacturer warranty guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise preparation of the GIS system for high-voltage dielectric testing, ensuring isolation, earthing removal, and proper test setup.
  • Lead Hi-Pot testing on GIS busbars, cable compartments, and breaker sections in line with OEM procedures and IEC 62271-203.
  • Coordinate with Client , EPC contractor, and commissioning team to ensure test zones are cleared, and safety permits are in place.
  • Oversee test equipment setup, insulation monitoring, voltage ramp-up, dwell timing, and discharge procedure.
  • Monitor insulation behavior and partial discharge patterns, identifying any anomalies, flashovers, or abnormal leakage.
  • Ensure precise recording of test voltages, duration, leakage currents, and result interpretations in line with OEM acceptance criteria.
  • Troubleshoot test interruptions or failures and advise on retesting conditions or repair requirements.
  • Submit detailed Hi-Pot test reports, including site observations, readings, and pass/fail statements for each GIS section tested.
  • Support final re-commissioning steps post-Hi-Pot including re-earthing, system reset, and preparation for energization.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

Diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering or High-Voltage Technology.

Years of Experience

Minimum 8 years in HV field testing, with at least 3 years directly supervising GIS Hi-Pot testing.

Industry Exposure

Experience with GIS systems in substations, utilities, or oil & gas EPC environments.

Technical Tool/Software Proficiency

  • Hi-Pot test equipment (e.g., HV test sets from, Haefely, HighVolt, Phenix or special tester supplied by manufacture)
  • Microsoft Excel/Word for test report compilation
  • Familiarity with GIS manufacturer documentation and IEC/IEEE standards

Technical Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of GIS high-voltage dielectric testing principles.
  • Competence in performing HVAC (50Hz/60Hz)
  • Familiarity with GIS gas compartments, test bushings, disconnector isolation, and safety earthing practices.
  • Understanding of insulation coordination, leakage measurement, and partial discharge behaviors.
  • Ability to interpret insulation test results and advise on system readiness for energization.

Personal Attributes

  • Safety-focused with deep understanding of HV test risk mitigation.
  • Highly detail-oriented and disciplined in documentation and test result accuracy.
  • Effective communicator with clients, test technicians, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Calm and decisive in high-pressure testing or abnormal response scenarios.
  • Committed to upholding OEM warranties and installation integrity.

Preferred Additional Qualifications

  • OEM certification for GIS testing or Hi-Pot supervision (e.g., Schneider, Siemens,
  • ABB).
  • Previous deployment as a vendor expat on 66kV or higher GIS systems.
  • Fluency in English required; Swahili or French is a plus.

Work Conditions

  • Site-based at remote GIS substation locations along the different location in Uganda.
  • Exposure to HV testing environments under strict permit-to-work conditions.
  • PPE mandatory; supervision of live high-voltage testing operations.
  • May include long shifts, night tests, and fast-response support during energization phase.
