Gas Technician – 66kV GIS Substation (SF6 Gas Handling & Testing Operator)

Closing on: Nov 15, 2025

Position Summary

The Gas Technician (SF6) is responsible for operating SF6 gas treatment and filling machines to evacuate, filter, fill, and recycle SF6 gas for 66kV GIS compartments. The technician performs pre- and post-filling gas quality tests and ensures proper handling, storage, and documentation according to environmental, safety, and OEM procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate SF6 gas treatment machines for evacuation, vacuuming, filtration, and controlled filling of GIS compartments (e.g., CBs, busbars, DS chambers).
  • Perform gas quality tests: moisture content (ppm), gas purity (%), dew point, and pressure readings per OEM limits.
  • Execute gas recovery and recycling operations for maintenance or reworks.
  • Monitor and record gas parameters during filling to ensure optimal insulation and dielectric strength.
  • Follow OEM-specific gas procedures (e.g., Schneider Electric, Siemens, or Hitachi GIS systems).
  • Apply leak detection techniques, vacuum integrity tests, and pressure decay methods as required.
  • Maintain detailed gas logs, cylinder tracking, and test reports for QA/QC and client submission.
  • Adhere to SF6 environmental safety protocols and handling regulations (including proper PPE, grounding, and ventilation).
  • Coordinate with GIS installation, testing, and commissioning teams for sequencing and safe handover.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

Technical diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, or Gas Systems Technology.

Years of Experience

Minimum 4 years of experience in SF6 gas handling for HV substations (66kV and above).

Industry Exposure

Oil & gas, power utility substations, or GIS installation projects involving SF6-insulated switchgear.

Technical Skills

  • Proficient in operating SF6 gas carts (e.g., DILO, WIKA, Micafil).
  • Skilled in SF6 gas purity, dew point, and moisture testing (using devices such as MBW,Vaisala, or DILO analyzers).
  • Knowledge of vacuum pumping and pressure control for sealed compartments.
  • Understanding of GIS compartment structures (CB, DS, ES, busbar, VT chambers).
  • Familiarity with IEC 60376 / IEC 60480 and environmental safety regulations for SF6 handling.

Personal Attributes

  • Highly responsible and safety-conscious when handling pressurized gases.
  • Methodical and precise in documentation, gas logging, and test recording.
  • Able to coordinate effectively with commissioning, QA/QC, and OEM supervision.
  • Calm under pressure and meticulous in leak management or rework situations.

Preferred Additional Qualifications

  • Certified by SF6 equipment vendors (e.g., DILO operator training or Schneider Electric gas filling procedures).
  • Familiarity with Schneider Electric,Hitachi 66kV GIS systems.
  • Awareness of international environmental regulations on SF6 gas reporting and recycling.

Work Conditions

  • Work inside GIS substation buildings under high cleanliness and pressure control requirements.
  • SF6 gas handling requires special PPE, grounding, ventilation, and leak detection equipment.
  • Exposure to high-pressure cylinders and vacuum systems.
  • Coordination required with multi-vendor and multi-discipline teams during critical activities.
