The Power Transformer Vendor Expat (80 MVA) is the on-site representative of the trans- former manufacturer, responsible for technical supervision of transformer erection, oil processing, testing, and commissioning. Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise the receiving, inspection, unloading, and mechanical assembly of 80 MVA power transformers, including: Radiators, bushings, conservators, breathers, OTI/WTI devices, and marshalling boxes.
  • Oversee oil filtration, degassing, and filling using vacuum oil treatment systems. Ensure oil samples are tested for BDV and moisture content.
  • Guide execution of pre-commissioning electrical tests, including:IR, WR, TTR, vector group, tan delta, CT/VT polarity, and core grounding checks.
  • Review and validate control wiring, protection interfacing, terminal blocks, and alarm/trip circuits.
  • Participate in punch list closure and ensure installation/commissioning activities meet OEM and Client standards.
  • Monitor proper grounding of transformer tank and neutral connections.
  • Provide clarification on manufacturer manuals, GA drawings, and wiring schematics.
  • Interface with protection and SCADA teams during energization and validation.
  • Submit detailed field service reports, punch points, and feedback to the transformer factory.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

Technical diploma or engineering degree in Electrical or Power Engineering.

Years of Experience

Minimum 10 years in power transformer field services, with at least 5 years on large- capacity transformers (60 MVA+).

Industry Exposure

Oil & gas, utility transmission, or HV EPC projects involving grid transformers or generator step-up units.

Technical Tools / Software

  • Familiarity with transformer test instruments and oil treatment equipment.
  • Microsoft Excel/Word for report writing and punch list tracking.
  • Reading and interpretation of OEM-specific wiring diagrams, SLDs, and test sheets.

Technical Skills

  • Deep understanding of HV transformer assembly, testing, and energization.
  • Experience with oil treatment standards and dielectric fluid handling.
  • Knowledge of IEC 60076, ANSI/IEEE standards, and commissioning protocols.
  • Familiar with protection interfacing (Buchholz, PRV, OTI/WTI relays) and SCADA signal validation.
  • Ability to guide and supervise subcontractors under technical and time pressure.

Preferred Additional Qualifications

  • Experience as a vendor expat on utility/oil & gas projects.
  • Familiarity with Schneider Electric transformer integration or partner factories.
  • Fluency in English required; Swahili or French is a plus.

Work Conditions

  • Full-time presence on remote HV substation sites in UGANDA.
  • Work around energized equipment and oil systems with PPE and HSE compliance.
  • May require extended hours during assembly, oil processing, and energization.
  • Travel across multiple substations based on project phase.
